Our Visit to the Tabitha Foundation N.G.O

Introduction

Recently we visited the Tabitha Foundation N.G.O here in Phnom Penh. This was part of our unit of inquiry, How We Organize Ourselves. We wanted to visit an established N.G.O to help us understand more about why and how they do the work they do.

Tabitha is a long established N.G.O which has been doing great work in Cambodia for over a quarter of a century. It was an excellent visit to an organisation worthy of support.

S.C.C Student Reflection

We learned that Tabitha teaches people to save money for themselves so that they learn how help themselves. They do this by saving 25 cents per week. Once they have saved enough they can buy some chickens which they can get eggs from and also breed, this gives them a source of food and money, because they can sell the chicks. As the family continues to save they can buy pigs, a well, a home garden and eventually a new house. Tabitha helps the people with some of the money they need and the help to build these things but they also make sure the people pay money themselves so that they take care of the things. This is important because it also gives the people pride in their actions.Related image

Tabitha is also building a hospitals for women. They help women because in a family when the mother is sick it is hard for the whole family to do stuff. They also told us that women are less likely to go to the hospital if they sick, and often larger problems could be stopped if treated early. Eventually Tabitha want to provide a mobile clinic which will drive around the city to help treat sick women.

Tabitha have also helped to build 89 schools in 6 years. They do this by working with the local village people, who contribute land and help build the school, while Tabitha provides the resources.

Tabitha brings women with HIV and gives them jobs. They give them jobs doing embroidery or sewing. They then take the items that the women make and sell them. They use this money to build the hospitals and the schools.

The visit made us want to help old women. Tabitha showed us ways we could raise money. We want kids to have a nice school and have many resources.
